# Installation

The installer provides both `incodex` and its short name `inc`. All subcommands and flags are interchangeable; the examples below use `incodex`.

## macOS: Homebrew

```bash
brew install daftAI2026/tap/incodex
incodex --version
```

## macOS: script

```bash
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/daftAI2026/incodex/main/install.sh | bash
```

If the command is missing, add `~/.local/bin` to PATH and reopen your terminal. Both installers install the CLI only. Use [inc update](/incodex/en/commands/update/) for subsequent updates.

## Windows: PowerShell

```powershell
powershell -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -c "irm https://raw.githubusercontent.com/daftAI2026/incodex/main/install.ps1 | iex"
```

Open a new PowerShell window, then run `incodex --version`. The installer puts the managed CLI under `%USERPROFILE%\.incodex` and adds its `bin` to your user PATH. An official Microsoft Store Codex installation is required; its location is discovered automatically.

## Choose a launch path

To open without app integration:

```bash
incodex open --dry-run
incodex open
```

On macOS, the terminal or launcher needs [Accessibility access](/incodex/en/permissions/) for normal-close detection. No permission is required for `open --dry-run`.

To add the in-app hat-glasses control:

```bash
incodex install --dry-run
incodex install
```

On Windows, first finish your work and **fully quit Codex** with `Ctrl+Q` or the tray Quit command. Closing its visible window alone may leave processes running. Reopen the official app after install.

On macOS, the default target is `/Applications/ChatGPT.app`. Installation modifies and ad-hoc signs that app. Read the [permissions and Appshot limitation](/incodex/en/permissions/).

## Build from source

```bash
git clone https://github.com/daftAI2026/incodex.git
cd incodex
cargo install --locked --path crates/incodex-cli
```

Install [rustup](https://rustup.rs/) first; `rust-toolchain.toml` selects the compiler. End users installing prebuilt binaries do not need Bun. Contributors rebuilding the Electron Runtime use the repository's pinned Bun version. The documentation site has separate dependencies.
